On September 25, 2015 Watson & Band hosted the China Law Salon at the multifunctional hall on the 26^th floor of the United Press Tower. The event was attended by guests from various enterprises including TOTO (China) Co., Ltd., Sumika Electronic Management (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. and Mitsubishi Rayon (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. Mr. Cui Wei, patent attorney in W&B’s Mechanical Engineering Practice Group, presented a lecture entitled “A Brief Analysis of the Characteristics of Patent Applications for Mechanical Devices”.

Patent literature for mechanical devices includes certain distinctive characteristics. Mr. Cui introduced notable examples to illustrate the characteristics of this particular type of writing, including (i) the characteristics of patent applications in the field of mechanical engineering, (ii) techniques for drafting patent literature and technical solution descriptions, and (iii) tips for replying to office actions during patent examinations. To ensure that the lecture was sufficiently relevant and specific, Mr. Cui presented four cases, including “Painting Structures and Associated Frame Structures” (a design patent application) and “Manufacturing Method for Leather Ball Panels” (an invention patent application), to elaborate on the relevant theory. Mr. Cui offered the attendees a great deal of knowledge about patent applications, and he corrected certain biases and misunderstandings about patent applications for mechanical devices. The lecture was well-received by the attendees.
